Digitally Printed Banners

SOne of my favorite bloggers has been having a March Madness style movie match-up for the past week or so. She took all of the Best Picture Oscar-winning movies for the last thirty-two years and matched them up in a bracket. So that everything was random and not fixed in any way, she simply matched up movies that were sixteen years apart, so for example the winner from 1979 and the winner from 1995 were matched up and so on. It’s been fun voting on each round and seeing which films made it through and which were discarded. I’ve seen most of the films in question, but for the few that I haven’t seen, she also included a third choice in her voting. If you haven’t seen one or both of the films or simply can’t decide between the two, you can choose the third option which is “can’t decide or don’t know”. I’ve tried to stay away from that option, but sometimes the decision is just too difficult. Right now we are down to the second to the last round and the films in the semi-finalists are: Forrest Gump vs. Dances With Wolves and Titanic vs. Schindler’s List. Geez Louise, could the decision be any harder?!? I even tried to put off the decision by working on the digital printing I needed to get done, but in the end I finally had to choose. It was tough, and I wouldn’t let myself cop out with the third cop out option, so what I finally chose was Dances With Wolves and Schindler’s List. I’d like to take this moment to apologize to Forrest Gump and Titanic. You guys are tops in my heart as well, and please don’t hang a banner outside my door calling me a traitor, but a decision had to be made. I’m looking forward to seeing what all the rest of her readers think.

Digital Sticker Printer

Oh boy. I’m in trouble. I have discovered the newest internet craze – Pinterest. I, of course had heard of it, but had never been interested in investigating further because let’s face it, what I really need is something else of a sedentary nature to waste time on. But then I was invited by one of my Facebook friends so I thought, “What the heck?” and gave it a try. Big mistake. Huge. HUGE. At first I didn’t like it. It felt too chaotic and it was too much work to wade through all the stuff I don’t care about just to find a few things that I do like. I should have stuck with my initial impression. Now I am officially hooked. Some people look for craft ideas and DIY ideas. Others look for wedding planning ideas or decorating ideas. I look for amazing digital photography, quotes and sayings and other things that I find inspirational and/or funny, and I also look for book stuff and movie stuff and stuff that I can turn into stickers (my youngest loves stickers). I have to say, though, the whole thing makes about as much sense as owning a digital printer without a computer. Oh well. Time to go peruse Pinterest some more…

Photos for Printing

As I was shooting the bald eagles, I briefly lamented the fact that I don’t have a better camera that has fewer noise issues and the fact that I don’t have an even longer lens. But my lament was brief. I decided to just shoot what I could shoot and enjoy the sights before me.

Unfortunately my lament came back to me once I had downloaded my digital photos to my computer. After seeing the shots I got, I again wished that I had a longer lens so that I could have gotten more close-ups, and as I was afraid would happen, the noise issues that my camera has definitely compromised the quality of the pictures. And unfortunately because of that, I (in my perfectionist’s mind) don’t feel that any of the photos are capable of being a high quality digital print. I’m very happy that I got the opportunity to see the eagles, and I’m glad that I have digital photos of the sights I saw, so I am trying not to dwell on the fact that it’s not my best work and thus will not find its way through  my digital printer. The bald eagle seems to be more prevalent here in Iowa these days, so maybe someday if I ever get a better camera and a longer lens, I can try again.

Digitally Printed Signs

I sat there and took shot after shot. I was completely oblivious to pretty much everything around me. Which is why it took me quite by surprise when a police officer walked up to me and told me I needed to leave. Apparently this side of the road was a posted ‘No Parking Zone’.

Oops.

I honestly had not even realized that I couldn’t park there. When I pulled up, there was already someone else there taking pictures, so it didn’t even occur to me that perhaps I shouldn’t be there.

If I had noticed the ‘No Parking’ sign before I parked, would I still have stopped anyway?

Ummm . . . yeah. You bet I would have.

An opportunity like this doesn’t come around all the time.

Would I have sat there for an hour like I did? Probably not. Although I do have a tendency to lose track of time when I’m shooting something, as a photographer I try to be very respectful of privacy, private property, rules, and boundaries.

But in my defense, how could I not stop and take a few (or a hundred) digital stills of such majestic creatures? If only Nature would follow posted signs so that us poor humans could sit for as long as we liked and revel in the beauty around us without having to worry about whether or not it’s legal to be there, right?

Shooting the Eagles – Part 1

One of my wishes as a photographer has been to digitally photograph bald eagles. There is just something about their majesty that has always intrigued me. My husband recently discovered that there is a pond near where his office is located that many bald eagles have decided to call home this winter. Since he was on vacation over Christmas break, he agreed to watch the kids while I took off one morning to see if I could capture any digital shots. He was really hoping for one I could print on my digital printer for him to hang in his shop. I got to where he had directed me, parked alongside the road, and was enthralled. There were at least 25 – 30 bald eagles of varying ages flying around and landing in the trees and on the pond a short distance in front of me. It was one of the coolest things I’ve seen in all of my nature photography attempts. I quickly got out my camera, attached my zoom lens, put my camera on my tripod, stepped out of my vehicle and set up the tripod to start shooting. I then quickly took my camera off my tripod, folded it up, threw it in my van and hopped in the passenger side. That wind was stinkin’ cold! So instead I rolled down my window about halfway, propped my camera on that instead, and shot to my heart’s content.

Stickers and Decals Custom Printed

Posting something as you’re status in Facebook that you didn’t write and asking for a repost if you agree seems to be quite popular. But just like chain letter emails (and printed chain letters when I was younger), I never repost these things, and in fact rarely even read them all the way through. Once I realize it’s one of those kinds of posts, I typically move on. One of my friends posted one this evening that caught my eye, however. It went like this:

“Anyone who was BORN in the 60′s-70′s… We are the last generation who played in the street. We are the 1st who played video games & the last to record songs off the radio on a cassette tape. We learned how to program the VCR before anyone else, play from Atari, to super Nintendo. We are the generation of Tom and Jerry & The Flintstones. We traveled in cars without seat belts or air-bags & lived without cell phones. We did not have flat screens, surround sound, iPods, Facebook, Twitter, computers & the Internet…But nevertheless we had a GREAT time!”

I agree, and couldn’t resist responding with a funny remark. I commented on her status as follows:

“Although I was born in 1977, I have to admit I never played in the street. Then again, living off of a highway might have had something to do with that…” Heehee, I just couldn’t help myself.

Another thing that we did more than kids today seem to do was play with stickers. I remember having an actual sticker album in elementary where we would trade them with each other and put them in our albums.

Signs and Banners

I have a tendency to get bogged down in the past and the future and forget to focus on the present. I use my digital photos as a way to continue living in the past when I need to put it behind me and move forward. Then I use my tendency to over think things as a way to worry about the future too much. I keep waiting for some kind of sign to point me in the right direction, so I know that I’m taking the correct route with my life and how I’m raising my kids. Instead I should just relax and live each day as it comes and not worry about things that I either can’t change, or can’t predict. Life doesn’t give you a huge banner splayed across the front of your house telling you if you’re right or wrong, you have to figure that out on your own. That seems to be hard for me to remember, though. I guess you could say that I’m so focused on the journey that I forget to look at the scenery sometimes.

Digital Printing

My favorite artist is Terry Redlin. I absolutely adore his paintings. There is just something about them that draws me in. They are nostalgic and indicative of a time gone by; a simpler time that really seems to appeal to me. I used to have a digital screen saver of some of his paintings, but I lost the disc at some point so haven’t been able to view it in years. I also have a set of seven Christmas plates that I bought several years ago hanging in my dining room. My favorite piece, however, is the print my husband bought me after we first moved into this house over eight years ago. I had always wanted a Terry Redlin print, but had not felt that we could afford it, so one Christmas he saved up some money and bought me one. It was probably the best Christmas present he ever gave me. What I would love to have now is a book of his paintings. That way I could look at all my favorites whenever I wanted to, but in an affordable way.

Digitally Printed Garments

I am trying to establish a Christmas Eve tradition for my family. Ever since we stopped going to my husband’s grandmother’s house for her family Christmas party on Christmas Eve, we haven’t really had anything to do that night. At first I was okay with that, after having somewhere to go every single Christmas Eve since I was a baby (growing up we went to my dad’s family gathering on Christmas Eve then once I was married we started going to my husband’s family function), it was nice to not have to pack up the kids and go anywhere, getting home late only to wrestle with the kids to get them into their new Christmas printed pajamas and then to bed so I could relax and put out the Santa presents. But after a couple of years of having nothing to do, I realized that I missed it. And since I want Christmas Eve to be enjoyable and not stressful, I’ve tried to think of something fun to do. Last year I came up with the idea of putting some hot chocolate in a thermos, grabbing some snacks, and after an early supper of homemade pizza, heading out to drive around and look at Christmas lights for a while, then head home and put the kids to bed. That seemed to work well and we all enjoyed it so we’re going to do it again this year. It’s also a good opportunity for me to take some lovely high color photographs of the Christmas lights. I’m not sure it’s a tradition that will hold since after a while the kids will get too old to want to look at Christmas lights, but it will work as a tradition for the foreseeable future anyway.

Christmas Day here around my house is a pretty laid back affair these days. When I was a kid, we were always busy on Christmas Day. We would get up and open our presents (when we were young enough to still believe in Santa Clause), get ready and then head out to my mom’s family’s gathering. Now we don’t have a family gathering that takes place on Christmas Day anymore, so we get to relax that day. I will admit, sometimes I miss having anything going on that day, but I have found that I really like the relaxed atmosphere and non-rushing, non-frustrating day. Our plans for this year are to make the kids wait to get up until 9am like usual, open Santa gifts, let me take lots of digital photos of the kids, eat our breakfast of cinnamon rolls or doughnuts (whichever is the preference because we have both) and oj, then spend the rest of the day relaxing, perusing some online catalogs to see if they want to spend any Christmas money they received that way, watching movies, playing any new Wii games, and snacking on other non-healthy food all day, and watching the kids make customized single pieces of Christmas art. What can I say, we enjoy it.
