Digitally Printing Photos on Items

Several years ago, I was naïve enough to think that I could print and sell my photos. I bought a nice digital printer, picked out what I thought were my best photos (at the time), and spent countless hours deciding what I would charge, how I would try to sell them and where. My intention was to sell them on Ebay, but once I got done with all my big ideas school had started for that year and I was so busy with the kids that the idea never took off. I now know that this “brilliant” idea I had was definitely conceived during an obviously delusional time in my life. For one thing, I underestimated how expensive paper and ink would be. The other thing I underestimated was the fact that most of my photos at that time were nothing spectacular. I do a lot better now, but I still doubt that I would see any of my digital photos on shirts or anything like that. The printer wasn’t a complete waste of money at least. I have done quite a bit of digital printing for myself and even some for some high-detail, full-color images that I’ve sold. There’s just no way I could make any kind of a business out of it. Nothing wrong with dreaming though, right?

Twitter Redesigns Their Homepage

The Twitter homepage has already gone through a handful of changes in it’s five year life, and this latest one makes an attempt to portray Twitter as a global communication entity. Which I suppose, it is. Twitter co-founder Evan Williams tweeted the following message after the changes went live:

Very happy the team got the new Twitter homepage out the door. Definitely was time for a refresh.

The new page aims to encourage the idea of following topics and interests over people, though some specific users are featured on the page. The new screen lists a number of popular Twitter accounts and appears designed to encourage users to select who they follow based on what they’re interested in. Specifically the page features the slogan, “Follow your interests.” All this information is presented on a new blue background with a faded world map.

Google Patents The Idea Of Cycling Logos

Google is back in the news today for acquiring a U.S. patent for its changing logo system, something they call “Google Doodles.” The patent was granted this week, after being in submission purgatory since 2001.

The patent goes by the name “Systems and Methods for Enticing Users to a Web Site.” The description declares that the patent is for the invention of “periodically changing story line and/or special event company logo to entice users to access a web page.”

Sounds more complicated than it is, because all it means is that Google has patented the concept of changing a logo for special events and holidays. Below, is a description from the patent about the method Google uses to change its logo:

“A non-transitory computer-readable medium that stores instructions executable by one or more processors to perform a method for attracting users to a web page, comprising: instructions for creating a special event logo by modifying a standard company logo for a special event, where the instructions for creating the special event logo includes instructions for modifying the standard company logo with one or more animated images; instructions for associating a link or search results with the special event logo, the link identifying a document relating to the special event, the search results relating to the special event; instructions for uploading the special event logo to the web page; instructions for receiving a user selection of the special event logo; and instructions for providing the document relating to the special event or the search results relating to the special event based on the user selection.”

Many people are outraged by this frivolous patent, including Business Insider’s Matt Rosoff, who said that “the patent system was originally created to foster innovation by protecting small inventors from having their ideas ripped off by big companies. But increasingly, big companies are using patents for exactly the opposite reason – to stop competitors from innovating.”

Target Removes Name From Logo Design

Taking a page from the marketing books of Starbucks, Target has removed their name from their logo. The changes have been gradual, with a Target spokesperson saying that the company has been slowly stripping the word from its logos.

“Target uses both logos—with and without the Target name—for different purposes and has been doing so for some time,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Both Starbucks and Target are attempting to find success with the less-is-more approach. By removing the extraneous elements from their logos, and by that we mean the company name text, the companies are banking on the idea that the stand alone logo image is what matters most to their brand. Both companies are planning global expansion, so a wordless logo makes sense in that way.
