Pixellogo template review: 3D-271

Today’s featured logo template is 3D-271, a high-tech style design with a futuristic look. This particular logo template is modelled in the shape of a deconstructed sphere that contains an inner glow, as it was trying to break through its shell. Futuristic and technologic is the concept behind this logo, and the volumetric dimension of it is composed by its various shades and glows.

This logo template is definitely eye-catching (and a bit Stars Wars’ Death Star, no?) and evokes all this futuristic, kind of robotic overall look. This style of 3D logo designs are a big trend, as they match somehow the idea of technology that we have. It’s a logo design that can be used in a conceptual way, that plays with deconstruction. You can see more logo templates in this style here.

Digitally Printed Garments

I am trying to establish a Christmas Eve tradition for my family. Ever since we stopped going to my husband’s grandmother’s house for her family Christmas party on Christmas Eve, we haven’t really had anything to do that night. At first I was okay with that, after having somewhere to go every single Christmas Eve since I was a baby (growing up we went to my dad’s family gathering on Christmas Eve then once I was married we started going to my husband’s family function), it was nice to not have to pack up the kids and go anywhere, getting home late only to wrestle with the kids to get them into their new Christmas printed pajamas and then to bed so I could relax and put out the Santa presents. But after a couple of years of having nothing to do, I realized that I missed it. And since I want Christmas Eve to be enjoyable and not stressful, I’ve tried to think of something fun to do. Last year I came up with the idea of putting some hot chocolate in a thermos, grabbing some snacks, and after an early supper of homemade pizza, heading out to drive around and look at Christmas lights for a while, then head home and put the kids to bed. That seemed to work well and we all enjoyed it so we’re going to do it again this year. It’s also a good opportunity for me to take some lovely high color photographs of the Christmas lights. I’m not sure it’s a tradition that will hold since after a while the kids will get too old to want to look at Christmas lights, but it will work as a tradition for the foreseeable future anyway.

Digitally Printed Stickers

A friend of mine on Facebook tagged me in a picture that was just so awesome I want to have it printed on stickers to put on my Christmas card envelopes. It was a digital photo that she had found on the internet of a Christmas tree, but it wasn’t just any old Christmas tree. It was a Christmas tree made entirely out of books. I know, right? Books! It was so cool. Obviously someone had put down a layer of books in a circle, then another layer only alternating them enough so they looked staggered and so on getting smaller as they went up so that it looked like a tree. Then they put some lights on it and took a picture of it. I thought it was a really cool idea. And my friend thought of me when she saw it because she knows how much I love books AND Christmas! Two of my favorite things together in one place! I would consider making one myself except that I’m not sure I want to take that many books off my shelves. When I put them back, I’d have to reorganize them all over again. You never know though, I just might give it try next year…

High Resolution Printing

I enjoy photographing nature and landscapes and even some wildlife from time to time. I don’t have many opportunities to shoot wildlife, but every once in a while I will get lucky and just happen to be in the right place at the right time. One thing that I have wanted to get a shot of for the last couple of years is a bald eagle. I have no idea if I would be able to get a decent high resolution digital photo of one even if I had the chance, or if my camera is even good enough to get a decent shot, but I sure would like to try. The thing is that although there are bald eagles around here in Iowa in some places, I have never seen one myself. That is until this weekend. On Friday, as I was driving home from a clothing shopping trip in Des Moines, I saw one flying by near the interstate on the other side of the road. Then on Sunday, at my mom and dad’s house, I saw one flying over the hills near their property as I was taking out the garbage. It turns out that that particular bald eagle likes to roost in some tall trees that are on the edge of their property. I hadn’t realized that, and now that I have, I will definitely be on the lookout for it. I don’t know if I could ever get a decent shot since those particular trees are pretty far away for my camera, but it’s fascinating to watch them nonetheless. Too bad I can’t make a digitally printed sign that says, “Come here so I can take your picture” and actually expect it to work.

Digital Printer

I just saw the most awesome Christmas gift idea. It was explained on a website I check regularly. First you get a large votive candle holder which can be purchased at any craft type store for only a few dollars. Then you get vellum paper which can also be purchased at craft stores and paper stores and also doesn’t cost very much. Then you pick out a small candle that you will place inside the votive holder. They also are inexpensive and easy to find. I would give several so that the recipient has plenty of spares to use as the candles get all used up. Then you pick a high quality digital photo (landscape orientation works best). It can be of your kids, your family, or a landscape photo you took that you love. Whatever you want. Any photo would work. Then you use your digital printer at home to print the picture onto the vellum paper. Then place the picture around the outside of the votive holder and tape it into place at the back. Insert candle and light. The candle light glows through the vellum paper for a lovely effect. I can’t wait to try this myself. The hard part is going to be picking which photo to use and who to give it to.

How to Increase Your Internet Speed

Depending on where you live, you may have some of the same problems with a slow internet connection that I do with the internet companies in my area. In the past, this has caused me a great deal of frustration and stress until I discovered a few tricks to overcome it. Even if you have an excellent internet connection with great speed from DSL or a fiber optics cable, following these tips will make your browsing experience even better than it already is.

The worst way to slow down an already sluggish internet connection is to be performing more than one task at a time. While our culture is one that insists on multi-tasking in every area, it is not a wise idea in the online sector. Internet connections become heavily taxed by multiple uploads and downloads being performed simultaneously. What some people do not realize is that every time a new web page opens, images and other content have to be downloaded as temporary internet files. This is a certain way to slow down or even completely freeze an internet connection. Therefore, keep only one browser open at time and do not open multiple tabs on the same browser unless it is absolutely necessary.

As a similar idea, remember not to download unnecessary files. Many sites beg for our attention and want us to download their special desktop icon or new game. If you are not going to use the file, simply do not download it in the first place. Occasionally, I look through all of my programs and downloaded files and delete or uninstall those that I have never used or that I have not used in months. Remember that every download takes a small piece of memory from the computer. Several years ago, I learned the difficult way that to browse online takes quite a bit of memory as well. Unless you have a massive hard drive or upgraded memory, keep the files on your computer simple.

Some believe that using add-ons on the internet browser will make the browsing experience easier and more pleasant than without them. Even I have some add-ons that I like using. For example, I choose to have a security add-on that checks each webpage for viruses or other security threats before loading the page. I also have found that I use a search engine toolbar quite often. Therefore, I keep these two add-ons enabled. However, I do not believe that anyone needs many more add-ons than these. Only keep add-ons that make your life simpler over the long term since each one will add a few milliseconds to each page load. For one moderate length browsing session, this could add up to five to ten minutes of wasted time.
Finally, loading pages with multiple graphics dramatically slows down browsing. When I am shopping or browsing pages with images, I only choose to load the smallest number. I have learned never to choose the tab that allows me to view all the images on one page. If I do this, the page could take up to three minutes to load. Instead, I view ten to twelve images at a time, which allows the page to load within a few seconds.

Whether my internet speed is low due to very little memory on my computer or due to poor service from internet companies in my area, I have found that these four simple tips will speed up my browsing sessions. Even if you have a fabulous connection and a wonderful computer, following this advice could shave a few seconds off your browsing time. I just remember that in the world of computing, multi-tasking does not always save time.

Monochromatic Prints

I came up with an idea for a picture project that I wanted to try about a month ago. I have since been thinking about it and trying to decide if I really wanted to embark on a picture project when I don’t always have the time to get out and shoot like I’d like. I finally decided that with this kind of project I didn’t have to set myself a deadline, I could just keep shooting and adding to it as the opportunities arise. My new idea was a single color picture project, monochromatic if you will. My point is to try to take photos that predominantly have only one color. Once I’m done with a color, I don’t need to shoot any more for that color. It’s actually harder than you might think, but that was my point. I wanted something that would stretch my creativity and also attempt to stretch my knowledge and capabilities as far as exposure as well. So far I have the colors of silver (pampas grass), yellow (goldenrod) and green (wet leaves). Green was actually a lot harder than you might think since there is tons of green around us everywhere at this time of year. That’s actually the problem, though. I need to make the photos as interesting as I can, not boring and mundane and unimaginative. That’s the challenge. That’s the point.

Digitally Printing Photos on Items

Several years ago, I was naïve enough to think that I could print and sell my photos. I bought a nice digital printer, picked out what I thought were my best photos (at the time), and spent countless hours deciding what I would charge, how I would try to sell them and where. My intention was to sell them on Ebay, but once I got done with all my big ideas school had started for that year and I was so busy with the kids that the idea never took off. I now know that this “brilliant” idea I had was definitely conceived during an obviously delusional time in my life. For one thing, I underestimated how expensive paper and ink would be. The other thing I underestimated was the fact that most of my photos at that time were nothing spectacular. I do a lot better now, but I still doubt that I would see any of my digital photos on shirts or anything like that. The printer wasn’t a complete waste of money at least. I have done quite a bit of digital printing for myself and even some for some high-detail, full-color images that I’ve sold. There’s just no way I could make any kind of a business out of it. Nothing wrong with dreaming though, right?

Twitter Redesigns Their Homepage

The Twitter homepage has already gone through a handful of changes in it’s five year life, and this latest one makes an attempt to portray Twitter as a global communication entity. Which I suppose, it is. Twitter co-founder Evan Williams tweeted the following message after the changes went live:

Very happy the team got the new Twitter homepage out the door. Definitely was time for a refresh.

The new page aims to encourage the idea of following topics and interests over people, though some specific users are featured on the page. The new screen lists a number of popular Twitter accounts and appears designed to encourage users to select who they follow based on what they’re interested in. Specifically the page features the slogan, “Follow your interests.” All this information is presented on a new blue background with a faded world map.

Google Patents The Idea Of Cycling Logos

Google is back in the news today for acquiring a U.S. patent for its changing logo system, something they call “Google Doodles.” The patent was granted this week, after being in submission purgatory since 2001.

The patent goes by the name “Systems and Methods for Enticing Users to a Web Site.” The description declares that the patent is for the invention of “periodically changing story line and/or special event company logo to entice users to access a web page.”

Sounds more complicated than it is, because all it means is that Google has patented the concept of changing a logo for special events and holidays. Below, is a description from the patent about the method Google uses to change its logo:

“A non-transitory computer-readable medium that stores instructions executable by one or more processors to perform a method for attracting users to a web page, comprising: instructions for creating a special event logo by modifying a standard company logo for a special event, where the instructions for creating the special event logo includes instructions for modifying the standard company logo with one or more animated images; instructions for associating a link or search results with the special event logo, the link identifying a document relating to the special event, the search results relating to the special event; instructions for uploading the special event logo to the web page; instructions for receiving a user selection of the special event logo; and instructions for providing the document relating to the special event or the search results relating to the special event based on the user selection.”

Many people are outraged by this frivolous patent, including Business Insider’s Matt Rosoff, who said that “the patent system was originally created to foster innovation by protecting small inventors from having their ideas ripped off by big companies. But increasingly, big companies are using patents for exactly the opposite reason – to stop competitors from innovating.”
