Shooting the Eagles – Part 1
One of my wishes as a photographer has been to digitally photograph bald eagles. There is just something about their majesty that has always intrigued me. My husband recently discovered that there is a pond near where his office is located that many bald eagles have
decided to call home this winter. Since he was on vacation over Christmas break, he agreed to watch the kids while I took off one morning to see if I could capture any digital shots. He was really hoping for one I could print on my digital printer for him to hang in his shop. I got to where he had directed me, parked alongside the road, and was enthralled. There were at least 25 – 30 bald eagles of varying ages flying around and landing in the trees and on the pond a short distance in front of me. It was one of the coolest things I’ve seen in all of my nature photography attempts. I quickly got out my camera, attached my zoom lens, put my camera on my tripod, stepped out of my vehicle and set up the tripod to start shooting. I then quickly took my camera off my tripod, folded it up, threw it in my van and hopped in the passenger side. That wind was stinkin’ cold! So instead I rolled down my window about halfway, propped my camera on that instead, and shot to my heart’s content.

My favorite artist is Terry Redlin. I absolutely adore his paintings. There is just something about them that draws me in. They are
nostalgic and indicative of a time gone by; a simpler time that really seems to appeal to me. I used to have a digital screen saver of some of his paintings, but I lost the disc at some point so haven’t been able to view it in years. I also have a set of seven Christmas plates that I bought several years ago hanging in my dining room. My favorite piece, however, is the print my husband bought me after we first moved into this house over eight years ago. I had always wanted a Terry Redlin print, but had not felt that we could afford it, so one Christmas he saved up some money and bought me one. It was probably the best Christmas present he ever gave me. What I would love to have now is a book of his paintings. That way I could look at all my favorites whenever I wanted to, but in an affordable way.

I am trying to establish a Christmas Eve tradition for my family. Ever since we stopped going to my husband’s grandmother’s house for her family Christmas party on Christmas Eve, we haven’t really had anything to do that night. At first I was okay with that, after having somewhere to go every single Christmas Eve since I was a baby (growing up we went to my dad’s family gathering on Christmas Eve then once I was married we started going to my husband’s family function), it was nice to not have to pack up the kids and go anywhere, getting home late only to wrestle with the kids to get them into their new Christmas printed pajamas and then to bed so I could relax and put out the Santa presents. But after a couple of years of having nothing to do, I realized that I missed it. And since I want Christmas Eve to be enjoyable and not stressful, I’ve tried to think of something fun to do. Last year I came up with the idea of putting some hot chocolate in a thermos, grabbing some snacks, and after an early supper of homemade pizza, heading out to drive around and look at Christmas lights for a while, then head home and put the kids to bed. That seemed to work well and we all enjoyed it so we’re going to do it again this year. It’s also a good opportunity for me to take some lovely high color photographs of the Christmas lights. I’m not sure it’s a tradition that will hold since after a while the kids will get too old to want to look at Christmas lights, but it will work as a tradition for the foreseeable future anyway.

Growing up we always had three Thanksgivings. One was at my mother’s parents’ house on Thanksgiving Day. One was at my father’s parents’ house usually the following weekend. And a third was just us – my mom, dad, brother and sister – that we would have maybe a
week or two after Thanksgiving. My mom loved the food, and especially loved making turkey gravy with the leftovers so she always wanted to make the big meal. We made it unique by using the good plates that my mom and dad had gotten for a wedding gift, and the meal that we had at home was always the best in my opinion. Now that I’m grown with a husband and kids of my own, we only have one big family Thanksgiving, at my mom and dad’s house, but since that was moved to the Saturday after Thanksgiving a couple of years ago, I have started doing my own (simplified) Thanksgiving meal for just my husband and kids and me. And just like when I was a kid, we use the good dishes that my husband and I got as a wedding gift for this one meal only, and my kids love it and I know they will remember it just as fondly I as I remember it in my house growing up. And they’ll probably remember almost as clearly as the year I tried to burn down the house while cooking the dinner, but that’s another story. Thank goodness there are no digital photographs that have recorded THAT event for posterity…

My husband came with dishes, and I learned a long time ago to accept them. These aren’t your Grandmother’s Norman Rockwell dishes depicting sugary impressions of the so-called ‘American dream’. They aren’t even the kind of dishes I can serve a lovely red Thai curry on. They are satellite dishes. Large grey, ugly satellite dishes [...]

It’s the time of year to start thinking about Christmas presents for my husband’s grandmother again. She is one of the hardest people to
buy for. She doesn’t really need anything and is terrible about giving us suggestions. In the past we have given her framed digitally printed photos of the kids, and we’ve also given her slippers and pajamas. We’ve given her pots and pans and bath towels. She’s out of room on her walls so anything in a frame is out of the question. I was thinking that maybe we could have a group picture of the kids put on a coffee mug using sublimation or maybe have a picture of them digitally printed on a nightgown for her. We can’t give her any high tech gadgets like a digital printer because she doesn’t even have a computer. If all else fails, I suppose we could just give her a gift certificate to her favorite store. My husband doesn’t like doing that because he feels it’s not very personal, but I don’t mind because then at least you know they are getting something they will like and use.

My husband and I adopted my oldest son when he was six years old. From day one, he has always wanted to go into the military or be a cop. I even have a digital photo of him dressed for his first Halloween with us as an army guy and one from the next year dressed as a
cop. Maybe I’ll have those two photos printed on a t-shirt for him. Over the years, he has realized that it is possible for him to combine both of those dreams. Now he is a sixteen year old sophomore in high school, and it is becoming real to him that his dream is only a few shorts years away from coming true. My husband and I are completely supportive of him joining the army. We feel that it would be a great, one-of-a-kind experience for him and that it would also be an experience that he could use. We are also very proud of him for wanting to have an honorable career such as either of those. He has now begun looking at the army websites to see just what his life would be like, and is also trying to determine exactly which career would be best for him. I am guessing next year when he is a junior, he will then go to a recruiting office to get a recruiter assigned to him to help guide him through the process of the remaining two years until he can officially join. I’m glad he has found a direction to go with his life after high school, rather than being lost and not knowing what to do with his life. I hope everything works out for him the way he is hoping it will.

I just love it when you have a science lesson right in your own yard. Science was never my favorite subject in school, but I have to
admit that when you’re watching things unfold in real time and right in nature it makes things tremendously more interesting. Right now we have an unintended butterfly experiment going on right on our deck. I’ve seen an online catalog listing for a live butterfly kit, but we don’t need that. We have a doghouse-looking thingy that my husband built a few years ago on our deck right near our back door, and last year we ended up with two caterpillars that made their chrysalises in it, but this year we’ve had six. Two have hatched already and flown away and one just made its chrysalis today. I even felt the need to put a sticker on the house warning people to be careful and not bump into it so that our chrysalises don’t become dislodged. I’ve never seen a caterpillar in the process of making its chrysalis before, and although I didn’t get to see every single moment, I did get to see a few steps that are new to me. Then I found a video online that showed all the steps so I got to see what I had missed. Even though I’ve never been a big science person, I love nature and have gotten so much fulfillment from watching not only the butterflies go through their stages, but also from my kids reactions to watching the process unfold.

I’ve owned a lot of cats in my life so far, but my Molly is the sweetest, best kitty I have ever owned. She was a stray from the farm
across the road. During RAGBRAI two years ago, at only four months or so of age, she risked life, limb, and tail to run across the road amid thousands of bicyclists to come to our side. And although I didn’t want to deal with another stray cat, she won my heart immediately. I need a high detail, digitally printed t-shirt with her picture on it. Molly is the perfect cat for me. She is sweet and loving and yet very independent as well. She has the sweetest softest meow, so it is never annoying. She is a great hunter, not just mice but anything she can get her claws on, but she is also the best house cat, too. She loves to crawl inside my printed tote bag and hide. She almost never gets on the counters or table and never claws the furniture. I want digitally printed stickers of her that I can give the kids to use. She probably gives me more affection than my husband does. She has a tendency to get cold in the winter though so maybe I’ll look through an online catalog and see if there is anything I could use to keep her warm. She is precious and wonderful and the most beautiful soul you will ever see in an animal. For two years I’ve gotten to pet her and tell her goodnight every night before I go to bed. I’m such a lucky gal.

Quite often, businesses that my husband is working at will simply throw away office furniture that they are done using or that they feel has a flaw (the reason they get new). Sometimes he gets permission to have those pieces that are about to be chucked. That was the case just recently with some book cases. They are very nice bookcases, but they do have a minimal number of scratches and/or dings in them and one of the shelves is cracked. Thus, I now have a reference section for my library. Now all I need are digitally printed stickers to label each of the shelves like a real library. In the meantime, just for fun, I may have a digitally printed banner made up that says, “Carmen’s Library – Enter at your own risk”. The kids would get a huge kick out of that! I could also have someone use sublimation to put my favorite photo on a coffee mug that I could place on one of the shelves as a decoration. I was running out of room in my library/walk-in closet anyway, so I’m absolutely thrilled to have more shelves that I now need to fill up with books!
