My Husband Came with Dishes pt.2

In the last installment we learned of my husband’s satellite television hobby and my 15 year long hatred of the dishes affixed to the side of my house.  Through the observation of a passing dogwalker, my perspective was changed and my husband’s dishes were validated.  The whole experience brought to light just how important it is [...]

Digitally Printed Items

Saturday was my dad’s 58th birthday. It’s hard to believe that he is coming up on 60 years old already. In my mind he and my mom will always be 40. They may have a few more wrinkles and a few more gray hairs, but they never seem to age to me. Anyway, since his birthday fell on a Saturday, I was able to take my kids over to his house for a visit. My kids wanted to make him a printed banner, but I managed to talk them into keeping it simple with homemade cards instead, although they did talk me into making some printed stickers for him which I am sure he immensely appreciated. The kids got to help him a bit with his dogs, they spent some time watching football with him, and they even got to ride the golf cart with him. Then I made a supper for us all of parmesan chicken, spaghetti, and garlic bread. After that we topped off the tank with chocolate cake with white buttercream frosting and ice cream. Then on Sunday my brother and sister and their kids were able to make down to my mom and dad’s place and the whole process was repeated. I even think my niece gave him some digitally printed magnets that she had made at school. Plus the weather was gorgeous both days, so I’d say my dad had a pretty great 58th birthday!

I just love it when you have a science lesson right in your own yard. Science was never my favorite subject in school, but I have to admit that when you’re watching things unfold in real time and right in nature it makes things tremendously more interesting. Right now we have an unintended butterfly experiment going on right on our deck. I’ve seen an online catalog listing for a live butterfly kit, but we don’t need that. We have a doghouse-looking thingy that my husband built a few years ago on our deck right near our back door, and last year we ended up with two caterpillars that made their chrysalises in it, but this year we’ve had six. Two have hatched already and flown away and one just made its chrysalis today. I even felt the need to put a sticker on the house warning people to be careful and not bump into it so that our chrysalises don’t become dislodged. I’ve never seen a caterpillar in the process of making its chrysalis before, and although I didn’t get to see every single moment, I did get to see a few steps that are new to me. Then I found a video online that showed all the steps so I got to see what I had missed. Even though I’ve never been a big science person, I love nature and have gotten so much fulfillment from watching not only the butterflies go through their stages, but also from my kids reactions to watching the process unfold.

Business Signs and Banners

I have noticed something around my house this summer that I don’t usually see – a plethora of Tiger Swallowtail butterflies. You’d think we had printed banners out that told them they were most welcome to stop by. Most years, I will see an occasional one fly around, but usually what we get are mostly the black colored swallowtails and a few monarchs, but for whatever reason, we have many, many of the Tiger variety flying around this year. And not only am I seeing them around our house, I’m seeing them everywhere. It’s crazy! They are very easy to spot (they may as well have huge digitally printed signs on their backs) because they are bigger in size like a monarch, but are yellow with black accents. What is cool about them is that I’ve noticed that they find areas that they like to stay around, meaning that we have some trees that every day have a couple of these butterflies flying around them for hours. So the other day I took this opportunity to attempt a shot that I’ve been trying to get since last summer – capturing a butterfly in flight. And I think I finally figured out the secret. Find an area that the butterflies are frequenting, then on a bright, sunny day with little wind, lay on your back on the ground, put your camera settings on a high shutter speed and also on the burst mode, point your camera up, cross your fingers, and shoot lots and lots of pictures. I finally got the shot I was going for and after tweaking it in Photoshop I got the look I wanted. Now just add some vinyl lettering and it could be placed in my front yard to be the business sign for the photography business that I’m going to (someday) start.

Digital Printing

The other evening, I took a break from looking at the high color photographs I was looking at on my computer and stepped outside for a moment right around sunset and just happened to look toward the sky above my house. What I noticed really quite surprised me. Then I looked around further and noticed more. There were tons of dragonflies flying around. I’ve seen many dragonflies around my parents’ pond during the middle of the day, but seeing as how it’s a pond, that’s to be expected. I don’t have a pond anywhere near my home (the closest thing I have is a photo printed on a shirt) so that is where the surprise at seeing so many came in. Plus even during the heat of the day, I could count on one hand the number of dragonflies I’ve seen around my property. But this was such an interesting and unexpected experience that I (of course) just had to head back into my house to grab my camera. When I got back out, the dragonflies were still flying around so I took several shots. There’s nothing terribly spectacular about the pictures I got other than the fact that I was able to capture several dragonflies all in one shot. I’m glad that I have a nice digital printer, though. That way if I should decide I want a copy of my picture, I have the ability to create a crisp digital print that I can feel comfortable hanging on my wall if I want.

Digital Photos on Clothes

I’ve owned a lot of cats in my life so far, but my Molly is the sweetest, best kitty I have ever owned.  She was a stray from the farm across the road. During RAGBRAI two years ago, at only four months or so of age, she risked life, limb, and tail to run across the road amid thousands of bicyclists to come to our side. And although I didn’t want to deal with another stray cat, she won my heart immediately. I need a high detail, digitally printed t-shirt with her picture on it. Molly is the perfect cat for me. She is sweet and loving and yet very independent as well. She has the sweetest softest meow, so it is never annoying. She is a great hunter, not just mice but anything she can get her claws on, but she is also the best house cat, too. She loves to crawl inside my printed tote bag and hide. She almost never gets on the counters or table and never claws the furniture. I want digitally printed stickers of her that I can give the kids to use. She probably gives me more affection than my husband does. She has a tendency to get cold in the winter though so maybe I’ll look through an online catalog and see if there is anything I could use to keep her warm. She is precious and wonderful and the most beautiful soul you will ever see in an animal. For two years I’ve gotten to pet her and tell her goodnight every night before I go to bed. I’m such a lucky gal.

Holiday Snaps

The 3D juggernaut continues to roll on with new technology appearing all the time. The latest such technology to arrive on the market (albeit a rather expensive one) are 3D cameras which promise to allow you to take holiday snaps in full, wonderful 3D.

Approaching things backwards a little bit, your snaps, once taken, can be processed in one of three ways. You can connect them up to an existing 3D TV in your house and take a look at them whenever you want, you can send them to Japan (or at least, you can with one manufacturer) who will send you back the pictures on an ultra-modern equivalent of crinkle cut cardboard, or you can buy a special viewing screen.

The viewing screens are clever little things, like the digital imagers that have been available for about a decade, they rotate through your images in the background. The latest ones also allow you to use them as back up mini televisions, so you can turn off your pictures (they don’t have to be 3D) and watch normal television, or something like Sky HD should you so wish. Obviously, like their flat digital counterparts, these screens are expensive, but if you’re the type to take 3D holiday snaps, price is less of an issue.

The camera works in an ingenious fashion. Although just like a standard (if slightly large) digital camera it has two separate lenses, one which takes an image of the foreground, the other which takes an image of the background. The processor inside the camera (which is more powerful than the one which took men to the moon) combines the two images, mixes them together, and produces astonishing 3D images, all for the price of around £600 (although this will, of course, fall in the years and months to come).

If that doesn’t satisfy you, there are also cameras around that allow you to produce your own 3D video using broadly the same system but for a little more money.

Admittedly, it’s still a little way off before these cameras are able to produce really high class images, so don’t expect to be downloading video on demand shot on such a device in someone’s back yard any time soon. Still, with 3D technology developing all the time, it won’t be too long before the cameras are affordable and high enough quality to really hit the mainstream.

Custom, digital printing on stickers and shirts

My fifteen year old son cut his hand today. He was working outside, doing some stuff in our outbuilding for his dad. He came to me with a blood soaked Band-Aid in his left fingers and blood smeared all over his other fingers, part of his left hand and on his favorite digital print t-shirt. I hope I can get it clean since he went through an online catalog for hours picking just the one he wanted for Christmas. Anyway, he held up the Band-Aid and said (as he’s smearing more blood around the wound trying to make it stop bleeding), “This is really bleeding. The Band-Aid didn’t work very well.” Gee, kiddo, ya think? I shoved, pushed, and cajoled him back into the house. In other words, I told him to get his behind in the bathroom. I got everything washed off and got my first real look at his cut. It was about a half inch long, and unfortunately was still bleeding, so I couldn’t tell how deep it was. So in true Carmen form, I just kept issuing orders until I could determine what needed to be done.

“Here, wrap your hand with this paper towel.”

“Now hold it up above your head while I see what kind of bandages I have.”

“Now let me see it.”

“Okay, hold it up again.”

“Okay, let me see it again.”

“You can stop holding it up now.”

You get the picture. By this point he had gotten blood all over the digital photo on his shirt. I was going to have fun cleaning that! Luckily, I remembered that he had had a tetanus shot two years ago, so he was good on that front, but I thought he might need a couple of stitches.  Once it stopped bleeding though, I was able to see that it wasn’t as deep as I had originally thought. I put my mom nursing skills into action and made sure it was thoroughly cleaned, bandaged and immobilized. I think I may need to get custom stickers for anything sharp to remind people to be careful! This was not a fun experience. But, looking at it again this evening, I’d say he is going to be just fine. As long as he keeps it clean, it should heal nicely and quickly. I need a customized shirt that says “I’m not a doctor; I just play one on TV.”

Renting V/s Buying Tablet PCs and Notebooks

It’s the age of renting. Be it a house, a car, equipment such as tablet PCs, notebooks, or desktops, today people prefer renting to buying. Just like a library of books, there are several companies that engage in renting tablet PCs, notebooks, laptops, and desktops. Renting a tablet PC or a notebook is becoming very popular with working professionals nowadays. Notebooks and tablet PCs come with the latest dual processors, enabled with handwriting recognition and multi-functionality. Several large and small companies alike prefer paying hiring computers or notebooks for presentations, conventions, training events, round tables and even for everyday use.

There are several advantages to renting over buying. To begin with, renting notebooks or PCs is a convenient and quicker option. If one were to buy a tablet PC or notebook instead, he or she would spend a lot more time deliberating the best option. The very next thing that strikes you about renting a tablet PC or a notebook is the fact that there is no maintenance involved. Any sort of maintenance is handled by the rental company. There are specified technicians in each rental company, who ensure that each piece of equipment that is delivered to you, is thoroughly tested and cleaned and configured to meet your exact needs and requirements. So your rented tablet PC or notebook is customized to your likes.

A successful trade show event, conference or meeting is a result of careful and meticulous planning and proper presentation. The equipment you use during these events makes a big difference. Rental companies are aware of these specifications and provide their clients with the best looking and well-maintained tablet PCs, computers, notebooks, and laptops. Computer accessories can also be hired in addition to the base requirements. One of the biggest advantages of renting computers is that when there is any technological upgradation, you can renew your contract with rental companies and rent the latest edition at an extra fee, which is still comparatively cheaper than buying a new one.

Rentfusion a nationwide computer rental company offering computer rentals, projector rentals, laptop rentals, audio visual rentals, notebook rentals, tablet pc rentals, video wall rentals with technical support and services.
