Shooting the Eagles – Part 1

One of my wishes as a photographer has been to digitally photograph bald eagles. There is just something about their majesty that has always intrigued me. My husband recently discovered that there is a pond near where his office is located that many bald eagles have decided to call home this winter. Since he was on vacation over Christmas break, he agreed to watch the kids while I took off one morning to see if I could capture any digital shots. He was really hoping for one I could print on my digital printer for him to hang in his shop. I got to where he had directed me, parked alongside the road, and was enthralled. There were at least 25 – 30 bald eagles of varying ages flying around and landing in the trees and on the pond a short distance in front of me. It was one of the coolest things I’ve seen in all of my nature photography attempts. I quickly got out my camera, attached my zoom lens, put my camera on my tripod, stepped out of my vehicle and set up the tripod to start shooting. I then quickly took my camera off my tripod, folded it up, threw it in my van and hopped in the passenger side. That wind was stinkin’ cold! So instead I rolled down my window about halfway, propped my camera on that instead, and shot to my heart’s content.

Digitally Printed Garments

I am trying to establish a Christmas Eve tradition for my family. Ever since we stopped going to my husband’s grandmother’s house for her family Christmas party on Christmas Eve, we haven’t really had anything to do that night. At first I was okay with that, after having somewhere to go every single Christmas Eve since I was a baby (growing up we went to my dad’s family gathering on Christmas Eve then once I was married we started going to my husband’s family function), it was nice to not have to pack up the kids and go anywhere, getting home late only to wrestle with the kids to get them into their new Christmas printed pajamas and then to bed so I could relax and put out the Santa presents. But after a couple of years of having nothing to do, I realized that I missed it. And since I want Christmas Eve to be enjoyable and not stressful, I’ve tried to think of something fun to do. Last year I came up with the idea of putting some hot chocolate in a thermos, grabbing some snacks, and after an early supper of homemade pizza, heading out to drive around and look at Christmas lights for a while, then head home and put the kids to bed. That seemed to work well and we all enjoyed it so we’re going to do it again this year. It’s also a good opportunity for me to take some lovely high color photographs of the Christmas lights. I’m not sure it’s a tradition that will hold since after a while the kids will get too old to want to look at Christmas lights, but it will work as a tradition for the foreseeable future anyway.

High Resolution Printing

I enjoy photographing nature and landscapes and even some wildlife from time to time. I don’t have many opportunities to shoot wildlife, but every once in a while I will get lucky and just happen to be in the right place at the right time. One thing that I have wanted to get a shot of for the last couple of years is a bald eagle. I have no idea if I would be able to get a decent high resolution digital photo of one even if I had the chance, or if my camera is even good enough to get a decent shot, but I sure would like to try. The thing is that although there are bald eagles around here in Iowa in some places, I have never seen one myself. That is until this weekend. On Friday, as I was driving home from a clothing shopping trip in Des Moines, I saw one flying by near the interstate on the other side of the road. Then on Sunday, at my mom and dad’s house, I saw one flying over the hills near their property as I was taking out the garbage. It turns out that that particular bald eagle likes to roost in some tall trees that are on the edge of their property. I hadn’t realized that, and now that I have, I will definitely be on the lookout for it. I don’t know if I could ever get a decent shot since those particular trees are pretty far away for my camera, but it’s fascinating to watch them nonetheless. Too bad I can’t make a digitally printed sign that says, “Come here so I can take your picture” and actually expect it to work.

Digital Printer

I just saw the most awesome Christmas gift idea. It was explained on a website I check regularly. First you get a large votive candle holder which can be purchased at any craft type store for only a few dollars. Then you get vellum paper which can also be purchased at craft stores and paper stores and also doesn’t cost very much. Then you pick out a small candle that you will place inside the votive holder. They also are inexpensive and easy to find. I would give several so that the recipient has plenty of spares to use as the candles get all used up. Then you pick a high quality digital photo (landscape orientation works best). It can be of your kids, your family, or a landscape photo you took that you love. Whatever you want. Any photo would work. Then you use your digital printer at home to print the picture onto the vellum paper. Then place the picture around the outside of the votive holder and tape it into place at the back. Insert candle and light. The candle light glows through the vellum paper for a lovely effect. I can’t wait to try this myself. The hard part is going to be picking which photo to use and who to give it to.

Unique Apparel Printing

Growing up we always had three Thanksgivings. One was at my mother’s parents’ house on Thanksgiving Day. One was at my father’s parents’ house usually the following weekend. And a third was just us – my mom, dad, brother and sister – that we would have maybe a week or two after Thanksgiving. My mom loved the food, and especially loved making turkey gravy with the leftovers so she always wanted to make the big meal. We made it unique by using the good plates that my mom and dad had gotten for a wedding gift, and the meal that we had at home was always the best in my opinion. Now that I’m grown with a husband and kids of my own, we only have one big family Thanksgiving, at my mom and dad’s house, but since that was moved to the Saturday after Thanksgiving a couple of years ago, I have started doing my own (simplified) Thanksgiving meal for just my husband and kids and me. And just like when I was a kid, we use the good dishes that my husband and I got as a wedding gift for this one meal only, and my kids love it and I know they will remember it just as fondly I as I remember it in my house growing up. And they’ll probably remember almost as clearly as the year I tried to burn down the house while cooking the dinner, but that’s another story. Thank goodness there are no digital photographs that have recorded THAT event for posterity…

Digital Printing

The other night I had just left to head into Des Moines to buy a wireless router to use with my new laptop. I’m thinking that maybe I should have gotten a new digital printer as well since my old one seems to not be working quite right these days. And of course I couldn’t just wait until the next day to get it, I had to have it right then. I was about a mile from home when I noticed something unusual in the sky. I slowed down; gawking out the window while muttering to myself, “What is that?!? What is going on in the sky?!?” Then it dawned on me what I was seeing – the aurora borealis. I had seen it once before about seven years ago and was so enthralled that I completely forgot to try to take any pictures of the amazing phenomenon. Then again it was also before I was big into photography, as well, and that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Anyway, I turned the van around, sped home, ran inside to grab my camera and tripod, ran outside again to a dark part of the yard, and started shooting. The northern lights didn’t last for very long, and were much weaker than they were the last time I saw them, but it was still a completely amazing sight. I like how my digital photos turned out except for one thing, they are too noisy. (Noise is all the little dots that you can sometimes see in photos.) So although I’m glad I captured the northern lights this time, it’s not like I’ll be making any digital prints of the photos or anything.

Digital Printing

The other evening, I took a break from looking at the high color photographs I was looking at on my computer and stepped outside for a moment right around sunset and just happened to look toward the sky above my house. What I noticed really quite surprised me. Then I looked around further and noticed more. There were tons of dragonflies flying around. I’ve seen many dragonflies around my parents’ pond during the middle of the day, but seeing as how it’s a pond, that’s to be expected. I don’t have a pond anywhere near my home (the closest thing I have is a photo printed on a shirt) so that is where the surprise at seeing so many came in. Plus even during the heat of the day, I could count on one hand the number of dragonflies I’ve seen around my property. But this was such an interesting and unexpected experience that I (of course) just had to head back into my house to grab my camera. When I got back out, the dragonflies were still flying around so I took several shots. There’s nothing terribly spectacular about the pictures I got other than the fact that I was able to capture several dragonflies all in one shot. I’m glad that I have a nice digital printer, though. That way if I should decide I want a copy of my picture, I have the ability to create a crisp digital print that I can feel comfortable hanging on my wall if I want.

As I was driving to a small town a little over thirty miles from my home last evening for my older daughter’s softball game, I found myself completely immersed in the countryside. custom sports apparel It was a gorgeous day; sunny, light breeze, lovely temperatures, and I reflected on just how much I love living in south central Iowa. By the time my daughter’s game was over, it was dusk and since I was heading in a westerly direction, we were accompanied by a beautiful sunset for the ride home. safety work clothes Funny thing is, that’s not all that accompanied us on the way home. We also saw about five million white-tail deer. Well . . . about thirty anyway. It was crazy! I’ve never seen that many deer on one short trip before. Luckily, most of them were beside the road (rather than in it or crossing it). custom embroidered sweatshirts Since they just stared at us as we drove by, I started slowing down as I went by, would wave and say, ”Hello! Fine evening we’re having here, eh?” and continue on. My daughter thought I was nuts (she’s not wrong), but soon got into the act herself as well. What? What can I say? We Iowans are friendly folk, don’tcha know. custom rhinestone shirts

T-Mobile Adds Free Wi-Fi Calling

GigaOm confirms T-Mobile will add free Wi-Fi calls to its UMA-capable phones: T-Mobile tried an alternative to femtocell and unlimited calling plans several years ago, allowing unlimited domestic calls over Wi-Fi for handsets with unlicensed mobile access (UMA) technology built in. UMA allows seamless roaming between Wi-Fi networks and the cell network, handling the billing and call details on the back end.

After a few years, however, even after making the add-on price as low as $10/mo for a family plan for unlimited calls that started on Wi-Fi (either placed or received on a Wi-Fi network at home or a hotspot), T-Mobile stopped offering the service to new customers. Apparently, it continued to be available as a calling option, with Wi-Fi calls being deducted from general minute pools.

Now, T-Mobile is making Wi-Fi calling free to postpaid Even More and Even More Plus customers (those that have had a credit check and pay at the end of a billing cycle). These customers need a UMA handset, which includes many BlackBerry models, and have to opt in to the free service.

False Kid Porno Raid Gets Media Play

A Buffalo, NY, man gets an early morning visit (and alleged contusions) from the ICE: His left his Wi-Fi network open, and extremely poor FBI work (according to this AP report) led to a raid on his home because that’s where the IP address led. While it’s no crime in the US—it is in some other countries—to leave your network open for anyone to access, this isn’t the first time this has happened. I’ve written up a few previous similar incidents that led to police or federal agents breaking down the doors for criminal acts conducted over the network at the physical address. In most cases, a neighbor is the guilty party.

You’d think the FBI would be briefing agents on this issue, so that they don’t face multi-million-dollar lawsuits for faulty work that pinpoints the wrong person. The Buffalo man isn’t suing, even though his attorney alleges he was thrown down the stairs by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He says they didn’t properly identify who they were after breaking down the door and brandishing weapons. (Who knows from ICE?)

Even on an open network, it’s possible to track identifiers that would allow relatively easy confirmation of which machine was the case, or to stake out the area for a few nights, tracking signals and locations. Then agents could enlist the homeowner with the open network to ensure the Wi-Fi signal remained available and could be used to track at which exact moment that a perpetrator was engaged in an illegal act and then raided at the same time. (We’re talking child pornography here, not file swapping.)

The AP article says that US-CERT recommends “closing” a Wi-Fi network among other security measures. This option, labeled differently on each maker’s router software, disables default beaconing, and thus the network name and availability isn’t broadcast. However, whenever the network is use by a party that knows the name and has associated with it (encryption or otherwise), traffic can be snooped and connection information extracted. I don’t recommend closing a network as it provides no effective security, and neither does limiting an network to specific MAC addresses (the Wi-Fi adapter’s unique hardware number).

US-CERT has six recommendations for best home practices on its Securing Wireless Networks page, which include these two. Closing a network is noted as “Protect Your SSID.”

Really, using a nine-letter/digit WPA password is the simplest way to protect a network in a reliable and secure way no matter what other restrictions are in place.

I choose to password protect my network in part because I don’t want to be indirectly responsible for anyone’s actions on my network (whether in a raid or just because someone commits a nefarious act using my router), and because Comcast caps my use at 250 GB per month.
