Christmas Day here around my house is a pretty laid back affair these days. When I was a kid, we were always busy on Christmas Day. We would get up and open our presents (when we were young enough to still believe in Santa Clause), get ready and then head out to
my mom’s family’s gathering. Now we don’t have a family gathering that takes place on Christmas Day anymore, so we get to relax that day. I will admit, sometimes I miss having anything going on that day, but I have found that I really like the relaxed atmosphere and non-rushing, non-frustrating day. Our plans for this year are to make the kids wait to get up until 9am like usual, open Santa gifts, let me take lots of digital photos of the kids, eat our breakfast of cinnamon rolls or doughnuts (whichever is the preference because we have both) and oj, then spend the rest of the day relaxing, perusing some online catalogs to see if they want to spend any Christmas money they received that way, watching movies, playing any new Wii games, and snacking on other non-healthy food all day, and watching the kids make customized single pieces of Christmas art. What can I say, we enjoy it.

Growing up we always had three Thanksgivings. One was at my mother’s parents’ house on Thanksgiving Day. One was at my father’s parents’ house usually the following weekend. And a third was just us – my mom, dad, brother and sister – that we would have maybe a
week or two after Thanksgiving. My mom loved the food, and especially loved making turkey gravy with the leftovers so she always wanted to make the big meal. We made it unique by using the good plates that my mom and dad had gotten for a wedding gift, and the meal that we had at home was always the best in my opinion. Now that I’m grown with a husband and kids of my own, we only have one big family Thanksgiving, at my mom and dad’s house, but since that was moved to the Saturday after Thanksgiving a couple of years ago, I have started doing my own (simplified) Thanksgiving meal for just my husband and kids and me. And just like when I was a kid, we use the good dishes that my husband and I got as a wedding gift for this one meal only, and my kids love it and I know they will remember it just as fondly I as I remember it in my house growing up. And they’ll probably remember almost as clearly as the year I tried to burn down the house while cooking the dinner, but that’s another story. Thank goodness there are no digital photographs that have recorded THAT event for posterity…

Today is Google’s 13th Birthday! Woo! Lucky number 13 for those who are superstitious, and the day a boy becomes a man if you’re Jewish. For Google it’s just the official date they picked to mark the start of the company. As with most things that were born many times in concept and then in [...]

Day one of our Fourth of July camping excursion was short (we didn’t get there until early evening), but ugh, it sure was icky! I was afraid the digital printing would melt right off our t-shirts! The high was in the mid-nineties and the heat index was over one hundred. That did not make for good sleeping weather, let me tell you! As the evening turned dark, I put on my bright custom silk screen printed shirt, and we were treated to a lovely lightning show in the distance. It was really cool to watch, especially since we had looked at the radar and knew that the storms wouldn’t be coming anywhere near us.
Day two was much better weather-wise. The humidity had broken overnight and the temps were much more reasonable being in only the mid-eighties. Thus with more comfortable weather to hand, the fam headed down to the pond to fish, and oh boy did they fish! They ended up catching over fifty bluegill and one catfish!
My sister, who is in the art services field, decided to try her hand at freestyle drawing. Later in the afternoon, the kids decided to get out the kiddie pools and the slip ‘n slide. They had a blast cooling off with those! Later that evening, we put some bubble bath into the small kiddie pool, swished it around, had all the kids that were ten or younger (of which there were six) put their swimming suits back on and voila, instant bath! We had decided not to use any more of our parents’ water than absolutely necessary so I had come up with the communal bath idea. The kids loved it and it got them at least slightly cleaner than they would have been otherwise. We then got them dried off and into their large digitally printed shirts (aka the shirts we gave them to wear as pajamas) Then to top things off, we made s’mores around the campfire.
