Flower Shots

Last summer I had this crazy idea to photograph the flowers in my yard at night with only the flash from my camera as illumination. My husband enjoys planting wildflowers, well … wildly. He had designated areas throughout our front yard where he simply threw down wildflower seed or randomly planted bulbs; then we waited to see what came up. We ended up with some very  random, very pretty flowers. We had lots of different varieties and colors of lilies and gladiolas, we had bunches of bachelor’s buttons, and about a million black-eyed-susans just to name a few. Since we had such a variety, and had more popping up every few weeks, I spent most of the summer shooting flowers in the dark. I imagine the neighbors wondered what on earth was going on, what with an odd flash of light going off at random intervals on any given night. I was very pleased with the results, so I kept shooting. Night after night, I’d set up my tripod, focus a flashlight on the flower I happened to be shooting in order to allow my camera to set the focus, set the timer on my camera, turn off the flashlight and let the camera do the rest. It was a lot of fun, but I have to admit I ended up with more than just a few mosquito bites. Itchy, itchy! There was also more than one incident when my flower photography session was cut short by nearby critter noises. We have skunks in our area and I most certainly did not want to come face to face with a skunk (Darling Hubby has done that – it’s not pretty). So this spring, when the weather began to warm, and the flowers began to bloom, I debated on whether or not to continue my nighttime flower shoots. I have come to the conclusion that the flowers have had their moment in the sun, and now it’s time for me to move on to other nighttime photography pursuits, such as perfecting my lightening shooting techniques. Yes, I take pictures of lightening. Yes, my sanity is at times questionable…
