Amazing findings: carved book landscapes

Montreal based artist Guy Laramée has some outstanding work both in painting and book carving among other various disciplines and, as he states in his website, his work focuses mainly on the concept of spirituality and the consciousness of being. His pieces are really interesting and if you dig up a bit into his work you can find yourself admiring beautiful, almost ethereal landscapes that can put you in this state of mind he presents through his work.

But this time I’d like to refer to his carved book landscapes which are sort of dug up sculptures he carves from bound books with such amazing detail that can leave you speechless. Whether you know of his conceptual background or not, this breathtaking works of art are an amazing tribute to all landscapes you could imagine. His inspiration varies from wild landscapes (very Lord of the Rings locations look if I might say) to zen gardens and even the Great Wall of China. But enough words, here are the pictures:

Pixellogo template review: Logo-2473

Today’s logo review features Logo-2473, one of our newly released logo templates. This logo design has a retro looking style with its font picks that combine old school chunky type with a sign style font that has a nice flow to it. The retro character of this logo is due its little details, such as the little stars and striped line at the bottom. The types chosen are very bold and they go well with the pint’s design, that has also a combination of bright shades of orange and completes the logo template with its bold strokes and simple shape.

It’s definitely a cute design, very modern and in the lines of the retro style trend for which it would be perfect for a new bar or a re-branding of one. The round shape that surrounds the design encloses the whole logo template to give it a more finished look. It would look great on badges, signs or even coasters. With this logo template you can also choose to get the business card, and here you can find more logo templates in this style.

Awesome type: topographic alphabet

We’ve seen already some examples of 3D typographies which are digital based. The folks at Synoptic Office have brought up the concept of 3D type to another level. In their website they have 2 beautiful examples of different applications of type, the most eye-catching one being the project Alphabet Topography, which as the name states, consists of embossed letters in different levels, as in the topographic maquettes. The result is an abstract looking typeface that can only be fully seen at a certain angle and plays with the various heights of each letter.

Their next project that I want to mention plays with the same concept of the curved lines that give the illusion of volume. They called it Swell: A Typeface. Basically it consists of a bunch of straight lines that are distorted in curves for this ‘swell’ effect. Pretty brilliant if I might say, and maybe also a wink to the Joy Division fans out there?

Great design review: Daniel Siim Studio

Daniel Siim is a danish graphic designer and student that works at his homonymous studio. His work varies from branding to editorial work, but what really caught my attention today is his work for his school’s branding project. The simplicity of his work and attention to little details is what separates his work from the average. As himself describes this project:

As part of a branding workshop I was asked to pitch a new identity for the merging schools which clearly signals the spirit and the values of the new organisation. The solution also had to include the need of individual profiles and different educational directions of the three schools.

The result is four minor logos (one for the organisation and one for each of the three schools) which combined creates a merging logo. A display typeface was also developed.

Here are some pictures of this project that really lives up to the nordic design style with its subtle details and clean cut overall look:

Fulfillment of Orders

After perusing the web more than usual (typically I stick to my certain websites and that’s pretty much it), I have discovered that there are a lot of digital photosout there of books and bookshelves. They can be of people’s personal libraries (like mine only a

hundred times bigger) or they can be of bookstores or public libraries, and all from around the world. Then of course there’s the book photography. I didn’t realize people took so many pictures of books. In the process of seeing all these images passing before my eyes via my laptop, I have discovered that not only do I love books, I love pictures of books as well. Scrolling through pages and pages of book pictures never fails to leave me with a smile upon my face. I suppose that is one reason (out of many) why I love my library so much. Not only is it my personal space, but (obviously) I am surrounded by books. I can look at my shelves and run my eyes over my book collection anytime I want and it never fails to make me feel a sense of fulfillment. I have had a love affair with books ever since I read my first “I can read” book when I was five or six. I guess I just never realized how much books really are my eye candy.

Sublimation

I recently saw something on the internet that I thought was really interesting. It was something called a sun pillar. I had never heard of a sun pillar before and thought the digital pictureI had run across was cool. A sun pillar is along the same lines as a sun dog or a moon

halo. The light from the rising or the setting sun is reflected off of falling ice crystals in the atmosphere. Amazingly only a day later, I saw a sun pillar of my own for the first time ever. It was a morning after a snow fall and the wind was picking the snow up and blowing it all up into the atmosphere at the same time that the sun was rising. Unfortunately it was occurring at the same time I was taking my kids to school so I was unable to get a digital photo of it. The one I saw wasn’t as tall as the one in this picture I found from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign website, but it was still cool. But now that I know in what conditions it is more likely to occur, I can be sure to keep an eye out for another someday. I would love to make a collage of different sky phenomenon to print from my digital printer and hang on my wall someday or to be able to have a company use sublimation to put it on a coffee mug.

Unique Printed Apparel

I’ve seen rainbows. I’ve seen the aurora borealis (although not unheard of in Iowa, they’re not a common sight either). I’ve seen moon halos. I’ve seen small sun dogs and even a really amazing one about fifteen years ago on my way to work. I’ve seen blizzards and funnel clouds (never seen a tornado in person though). I’ve seen amazing cloud formations and skies so blue it almost hurts your eyes. I’ve mapped out my favorite constellations for my own enjoyment, and I’ve seen Mercury, Jupiter and Venus with the naked eye. I’ve watched a lunar eclipse. I’ve seen the sun rising in the east while the moon was setting in the west. And I’ve gotten digital photos and done some digital printing of them all (some better than others). Not one of these things was hard to see, but for many they seem to be hard to notice. I love looking at the sky and seeing the natural wonders that are available for my viewing pleasure. It soothes my soul and gives me peace. And then to be able to look back at the wonders I’ve seen through doing some unique printing gives me that peace all over again.

High Res Printing

A few days ago, it was a calm and clear morning. When I stepped outside to pull my van up to the front of the house to warm it up for taking the kids to school, a really cool sight greeted me. In the east, the sun was beginning to come up for the day and to the west, the nearly full moon was almost to setting. It was very interesting to watch those two events occurring almost simultaneously. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to grab my digital camera and take a few shots before I had to take the kids to school that day. The next day, I stepped outside a bit earlier than the day before and made sure to take my camera with me. The scene wasn’t quite as good as the day before, but I tried to take some high resolution digital photos anyway. Since it was a bit earlier, the sun wasn’t up quite as far and being a day later, the moon wasn’t as close to setting as the previous day, but I was still happy with what I got. I’ll just have to pay attention to the moon and sun charts to see when the next time it is that this will occur and hopefully the weather conditions will be such that I can try to get a better shot next time. Although I really like the idea of using this shot and using sublimation to put it on a custom coffee cup.

Creating Long Lasting Evergreen Content

Evergreen content is the process of writing content that is effective is continually driving traffic to your website over a long period of time. The content is capable of standing on its own with little or even no updating. Historical content is a good example of evergreen content. Content written about the presidency of Bill Clinton can be relevant for the life of the website.

evergreen content trees

That is not to say that evergreen content has to be about historical topic or otherwise old stuff. For instance when the 2012 cars go on sale, the information about them will remain very consistent and require very little updating over time.

Other content is evergreen, but due to the nature of the subject it still has a limited lifespan. One such topic could be "How to reformat a Window 95 system." In these types of articles, you will need to incorporate this information into the content of the piece. If you use a url structure such as:

Title: How to Format a Hard Drive – Windows 95
url: example.com/how-to-format-hard-drive-windows-95/

Not only will this allow for keyword specific text that will aid in people finding your content when performing relevant searches, but it will provide a logical structure when new operating systems are releases for subsequent operating systems.

Before you begin writing your evergreen content, make sure that you have done sufficient planning and keyword research to ensure you get the longest life out of your piece. Follow these tips to help produce content that remains useful to your visitors.

  • Conduct extensive keyword research.
  • Use these keywords in your page, in your post and in the urls.
  • Keep your article/content narrowly focused and keyword centric.
  • Avoid the use of whimsical or catchy titles. These will almost always drive less traffic

In other cases, content is fairly static but requires occasional updating. Content written about changes to tax laws or investment strategies would fall in to this category as they change every few years.

Evergreen content is a great way to create a steady stream of traffic to your site. It should not be the only tactic you use to writing content, but it can be highly effective. Typically your evergreen content will be of either high value reference/resource material or will be "flagship content."

Flagship (sometime referred to as “cornerstone content”) is content written to make a readers life better, easier or faster. It is something that they search for in Google to find you by or something that directly benefits them. In essence, it is what people need to know to make use of your website and do business with you.

Here are some examples of evergreen content:

  • How-to Posts ("How to Install a Ceiling Fan")
  • Historical Posts about people, places or things (e.g.: "History of the Taino Peoples")
  • Reference Posts (e.g.: "How to Rebuild a 1969 Falcon Futura Carburetor")
  • Information Posts (e.g.: "Latest Carry-on Baggage Regulations for Delta Airlines")

Evergreen content is very dependent upon the amount of research that you do to prepare your piece. If done correctly they will continue to grow and produce results for years to come.
