Old school crafts: calligraphy love

With the incredible amount of design software and new digital techniques available, many of the traditional methods of graphic design have been neglected in favour of the modern facilities. It doesn’t mean in any way that one way is better than the other, it’s just nice to see that the old school ways haven’t been forgotten and can still measure up to the new standards of great design.

Here are some videos of beautiful calligraphy, it’s really amazing the great craft behind this pieces, and that they’re all hand-drawn is really mesmerizing. A little tribute to the incredible talent of these artists.

Calligraffiti

From their website:

The fairly new art of Graffiti and its somewhat rigid rules prompt us to look further back into the history of writing. This is exactly what Niels Shoe Meulman has been doing since his teens, and at the beginning of this century he started combining the two. Thus resulting in Calligraffiti: traditional handwriting with a metropolitan attitude.

Luca Barcellona is a graphic designer and calligrapher from Milan, Italy. He has some amazing work up in his flickr website, and here’s an example of the amazing work he does.

Pixellogo template review: Logo 3D-670

Original Pixellogo template

Today’s featured logo template from Pixellogo is Logo 3D-670: a 3D sphere that encloses the shape of a star.

This particular logo template is a high-end 3D design in the shape of a sphere that is composed by overlapping pieces. The combination of this plaques form a star in the middle of the sphere, that is coloured in a contrasting bright orange shade. The 3D logo design is completed with a composition of light and shadows, giving it a more realistic feel to it.

This style of 3D logo templates is perfect for any kind of business related with technology, gaming or software development. This logo design has a strong modern feel to it, but still combined with a delicate shape as the star. The choice of colours for this logo template is also an interesting choice, as it draws immediate attention to the orange-black contrast.

Here’s how it looks like in one of our business card templates:

Great design review: MoMA, NYC

Being one of the most important museums of the world, the Museum of Modern Arts of New York City doesn’t fall short as far as their design projects. For every exhibition, campaigns, brochures and so on, the in-house design team never disappoints with their edgy graphic proposals, they live up to their expectations, and far more!

Here is the MoMA’s personal design studio where they showcase their ongoing projects and others past. It’s really impressive how they deliver great design every time.  Here are a few samples of their great work, they give the museum its fresh and modern identity, mixed with fun and playful campaigns for every exposition. Considering the extents of the campaigns, it is really impressive the quality of work put in every campaign, great design worth for an international renowned museum.

Three of the best compact digital cameras

The digital camera market is simple vast. From bargain compacts for snap-happy partygoers to technical single lens reflex models for the serious amateur photographer there are almost too many cameras to choose from. Selecting just one is not exactly easy. However, we can make your job a little easier. We have picked three of the best digital compact camera models from Currys to suit three different budgets and technical levels.

Best compact digital camera: £50-£100

The Samsung PL121 compact digital camera is one of the best cameras you can buy in this price range. It has 14.2 megapixels that enable crisp, clear images and plenty of digital zooming. It has 5x optical zoom, meaning the lens itself zooms to the equivalent of 135mm and boasts a focal length of 4.9 to 24.5mm. This camera also boasts a small screen on the front, which is perfect for self-portraits and it can even take VGA video which is easily uploaded to the internet. At £79.99, this camera is a real bargain.

Best compact digital camera £100-£200

The FujiFilm FinPix S4000 compact digital camera is a cross-between a standard compact and a single lens reflex (SLR) model. It boasts a zoom lens and 14 megapixels but unlike other compacts you have far greater control over the settings allowing you to produce more creative images. The 30x optical zoom is a 35mm equivalent of a 24-720mm zoom lens, which means you can capture wide-angle landscape shots as well as zoom images. The 14 megapixels mean images are incredibly clear and blur and pixilation is minimised. It has nine ‘film’ speed settings including auto and low-light settings such as ISO 3200 and ISO6400 as well as a bright light setting of ISO64. It has a wide variety of exposure settings, similar to those on a DSLR camera, including shutter priority and full manual. Plus, if you aren’t sure about setting the camera up yourself, there are 16 effects to choose from including portrait, snow, sunset, beach, party and sport. This camera is the perfect bridge between compact and more technical SLRs.

My pick: FujiFilm FinPix S4000

Best compact digital camera: £200-£300

Nikon is one of the best camera makers in the world and the Nikon Coolpix P500 is one of their best compact-SLR cameras on the market. This camera boasts a massive 36x optical zoom, which is equivalent to up to 810mm on a 35mm camera. Along with 12.1 megapixels this camera really delivers on image quality. It has loads of ISO and white balance settings allowing you to have full control over the lighting and it has several exposure modes so you can create truly inspired and ‘cool’ images, hence the camera’s name Coolpix.

Digitally Printed Signs

I sat there and took shot after shot. I was completely oblivious to pretty much everything around me. Which is why it took me quite by surprise when a police officer walked up to me and told me I needed to leave. Apparently this side of the road was a posted ‘No Parking Zone’.

Oops.

I honestly had not even realized that I couldn’t park there. When I pulled up, there was already someone else there taking pictures, so it didn’t even occur to me that perhaps I shouldn’t be there.

If I had noticed the ‘No Parking’ sign before I parked, would I still have stopped anyway?

Ummm . . . yeah. You bet I would have.

An opportunity like this doesn’t come around all the time.

Would I have sat there for an hour like I did? Probably not. Although I do have a tendency to lose track of time when I’m shooting something, as a photographer I try to be very respectful of privacy, private property, rules, and boundaries.

But in my defense, how could I not stop and take a few (or a hundred) digital stills of such majestic creatures? If only Nature would follow posted signs so that us poor humans could sit for as long as we liked and revel in the beauty around us without having to worry about whether or not it’s legal to be there, right?

Shooting the Eagles – Part 1

One of my wishes as a photographer has been to digitally photograph bald eagles. There is just something about their majesty that has always intrigued me. My husband recently discovered that there is a pond near where his office is located that many bald eagles have decided to call home this winter. Since he was on vacation over Christmas break, he agreed to watch the kids while I took off one morning to see if I could capture any digital shots. He was really hoping for one I could print on my digital printer for him to hang in his shop. I got to where he had directed me, parked alongside the road, and was enthralled. There were at least 25 – 30 bald eagles of varying ages flying around and landing in the trees and on the pond a short distance in front of me. It was one of the coolest things I’ve seen in all of my nature photography attempts. I quickly got out my camera, attached my zoom lens, put my camera on my tripod, stepped out of my vehicle and set up the tripod to start shooting. I then quickly took my camera off my tripod, folded it up, threw it in my van and hopped in the passenger side. That wind was stinkin’ cold! So instead I rolled down my window about halfway, propped my camera on that instead, and shot to my heart’s content.

Stickers and Decals Custom Printed

Posting something as you’re status in Facebook that you didn’t write and asking for a repost if you agree seems to be quite popular. But just like chain letter emails (and printed chain letters when I was younger), I never repost these things, and in fact rarely even read them all the way through. Once I realize it’s one of those kinds of posts, I typically move on. One of my friends posted one this evening that caught my eye, however. It went like this:

“Anyone who was BORN in the 60′s-70′s… We are the last generation who played in the street. We are the 1st who played video games & the last to record songs off the radio on a cassette tape. We learned how to program the VCR before anyone else, play from Atari, to super Nintendo. We are the generation of Tom and Jerry & The Flintstones. We traveled in cars without seat belts or air-bags & lived without cell phones. We did not have flat screens, surround sound, iPods, Facebook, Twitter, computers & the Internet…But nevertheless we had a GREAT time!”

I agree, and couldn’t resist responding with a funny remark. I commented on her status as follows:

“Although I was born in 1977, I have to admit I never played in the street. Then again, living off of a highway might have had something to do with that…” Heehee, I just couldn’t help myself.

Another thing that we did more than kids today seem to do was play with stickers. I remember having an actual sticker album in elementary where we would trade them with each other and put them in our albums.

Signs and Banners

I have a tendency to get bogged down in the past and the future and forget to focus on the present. I use my digital photos as a way to continue living in the past when I need to put it behind me and move forward. Then I use my tendency to over think things as a way to worry about the future too much. I keep waiting for some kind of sign to point me in the right direction, so I know that I’m taking the correct route with my life and how I’m raising my kids. Instead I should just relax and live each day as it comes and not worry about things that I either can’t change, or can’t predict. Life doesn’t give you a huge banner splayed across the front of your house telling you if you’re right or wrong, you have to figure that out on your own. That seems to be hard for me to remember, though. I guess you could say that I’m so focused on the journey that I forget to look at the scenery sometimes.

Digital Printing

My favorite artist is Terry Redlin. I absolutely adore his paintings. There is just something about them that draws me in. They are nostalgic and indicative of a time gone by; a simpler time that really seems to appeal to me. I used to have a digital screen saver of some of his paintings, but I lost the disc at some point so haven’t been able to view it in years. I also have a set of seven Christmas plates that I bought several years ago hanging in my dining room. My favorite piece, however, is the print my husband bought me after we first moved into this house over eight years ago. I had always wanted a Terry Redlin print, but had not felt that we could afford it, so one Christmas he saved up some money and bought me one. It was probably the best Christmas present he ever gave me. What I would love to have now is a book of his paintings. That way I could look at all my favorites whenever I wanted to, but in an affordable way.
